Oakham Castle as photographed by James Bowyer Photography, featured in Rutland Pride Magazine, July 2015 edition.
Oakham Castle is an unusual building, not really a castle seen in fairytales with turrets and draw bridges although has a long and interesting royal history - built around 1180, the section that remains is the Great Hall of the original building.
Entrance is through a large arched gateway from Oakham Market Place. The building is managed by Rutland County Council.
Walking into Oakham Castle you can’t help but notice the many horseshoes which cover the back wall, some large and small.
A long standing tradition is that any royal visitor to Oakham should forfeit a horseshoe to the lord of the manor - which today would be the town Mayor of Oakham
