Oakham Castle as photographed by James Bowyer Photography, featured in Rutland Pride Magazine, July 2015 edition.
Oakham Castle is an unusual building, not really a castle as seen in fairytales, but it has a long a interesting royal history. It was built around 1180 and the section that remains is the Great Hall of the original building.
Entrance is through a large arched gateway from Oakham Market Place. The building is managed by Rutland County Council.
Walking into Oakham Castle you can’t help but notice the many horseshoes which cover the back wall, some large and some small. A long-standing tradition is that any royal visitor to Oakham should forfeit a horseshoe to the lord of the manor - which today would be the town Mayor of Oakham.
